The Università degli Studi di Milano (University of Milan - UMIL) leads VALERIE “extraction of knowledge” activities and is an internationally renowned teaching and research university.

UMIL is one the largest universities in Italy with approximately 60,000 students and is a leading institute in Italy and Europe for scientific productivity.

EU programmes represent a major source of funding for the University of Milan, which up to December 2012 had signed 114 contracts with the EU under the 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013).

Research topics of interest to VALERIE include cropping systems modelling, agricultural databases, sustainability assessments carried out with agro-ecological indicators, and laboratory / greenhouse / field experiments on nitrogen fertilisation.

The agronomy research group has a special interest in farm and food machinery, information technologies and modelling for farm mechanisation, sensors and automation for biosystems and bioprocesses, hydrology, water, and environmental management.
