Web Portal: Manure Knowledge Kiosk: one-stop-shop launched for improving manure management.

The newly launched Manure Knowledge Kiosk offers resources, knowledge and connections to support improved manure management. Good manure management is essential in recycling nutrients and organic matter for healthy and productive soils. It enhances food security while reducing emissions to the environment and offers to all stakeholders in the livestock sector a one-stop-shop to support and provide technical services.

The Kiosk is part of the Livestock and Manure Management Component of the Agriculture Initiative supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC). This is part of a broader global effort to address short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) – including methane and black carbon- emissions from key agricultural sectors by sharing and implementing best practices in a manner that enhances food security and livelihoods and is consistent with broader climate change objectives.

Valerie themes:

Crop rotation including soil cover management and integrated pest management.
Recycling and smart use of biomass and food waste, in particular waste generated during primary production.

One-stop-shop
The Kiosk focuses on providing support to countries, projects and practitioners to help them in improving manure management, and to connect them to the knowledge, skills, and resources they need. In practice this means:
•       access to an international library on manure management;
•       access to a Roster of Experts for assistance;
•       show-case examples of actual practice change;
•       connection to the Livestock GEO-wiki, showing global information about and the impact of manure management.
There are many opportunities for improving manure management, with the disclosed information the Kiosk also aims to inspire local stakeholders to improve their manure management policies and practices.
The web portal www.manurekiosk.org is hosted by the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock, a partnership of livestock sector stakeholders committed to the sustainable development of the sector.

Integrated Manure Management
Manure is a valuable source of crop nutrients, organic matter and renewable energy. It is key in maintaining soil health and productivity, hence it is key in improving food security and it can contribute to energy production. Despite its importance, manure is often poorly managed and as a consequence, nutrients and organic matter are lost, causing environmental and climate problems as well as public health issues.
Integrated manure management is essential in all livestock systems because it ensures an optimal use of these sources and prevents environmental problems at the same time. Integrated manure management always starts with manure collection and ends with application as a fertiliser. In between and depending on local conditions there may be storage and possibly anaerobic digestion or other treatments.

Climate and Clean Air Coalition
The Manure Kiosk is part of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC). The CCAC is a voluntary global partnership of governments, intergovernmental organisations, business, scientific institutions and civil society committed to catalysing concrete, substantial action to reduce SLCPs (including methane, black carbon and many hydroflurocarbons). The Coalition works through collaborative initiatives to raise awareness, mobilise resources, and lead transformative actions in key emitting sectors. The Livestock and Manure Management Component is coordinated by Wageningen UR Livestock Research in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) in Bangkok, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica.
